Vortrag von Stephen Barrass (Universität Canberra) zum VI. Sound Studies Symposion | Fear and Greed, Boom and Crash | 9. Mai 09 | 14.30 Uhr Posted on Mai 5th
A method for Designing and Sonifications um 14.30 Uhr halten.
Abstract:
What if we could hear the ebb and flow of emotions and financial data wafting from the skyscraper offices high above, mixed in with the traffic down here on the city street ?
This talk will describe the development of a comprehensive method for designing Stream-based sonifications that provides creative inspiration, expert guidance, and a theoretical framework for conveying aspects of the world through non-verbal sound. The method has been developed through
case-studies that identified the importance of an auditory metaphor to aid in the interpretation of the sounds. Reflections on these practical examples led to the development of a Schema level of design that links the sonification metaphor to a familiar mental model in the listening context. This metaphor can be designed from a general palette of synthesis techniques such as auralisation, granular synthesis, physical models and spatialisation. At the psychoacoustic level the design process employs heuristics from the Theory of Auditory Scene Analysis to account for the effects of auditory attention and enable wholistic perception of informational relations in a data set. Current research is directed at the inclusion of models of emotion from musical cognition into the design
framework.
